The state government has estimated that the total loss due to floods across several districts following incessant rains was to the tune of Rs 5,438 crore. According to the government's estimation, the damage to roads was Rs 2,362 crore;energy department (damage to electrical installation) Rs 175 crore; crop loss in 41,5000 acres Rs 415 crore; irrigation-repair to minor tanks Rs 629 crore;

Panchayati raj and rural development, including RWS Rs 170 crore; medical and health Rs 12 crore; animal husbandry Rs 25 crore; municipal administration Rs 1,150 crore and

damages in other departments and public properties Rs 500 crore. Agriculture department officials informed that crop damage across Nalgonda, Siddipet, Khammam and Suryapet districts is being assessed.

They said that further damage to crops will be contained if water does not stagnate in the fields. Farmers are being advised to drain water. If the water is drained out of the field, the damage to crops will be avoided. While paddy can withstand water stagnation to an extent, cotton and maize will start rotting soon. Meanwhile, in the absence of an insurance scheme, damage to crops could prove disastrous for farmers.
