The Telangana High Court refrained from ordering that TV show Bigg Boss be subject to the Censor Board, as sought by a petitioner.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and Justice A. Abhishek Reddy was dealing with a petition which wanted the reality show to be taken off air due to its allegedly obscene and objectionable content.
In case stopping the telecast was not possible, the petitioner requested the High Court to issue directives so
that it is aired after 11 pm. He appealed to the court to order the organisers to ensure that the show is censored before it is telecast.
The bench observed that the courts safeguard the rights of citizens and hence cannot place restrictions on the freedom of expression. It said that the petitioner and citizens have the right to complain against any alleged obscenity in the programme before an appropriate forum like the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
