The State Police is gearing up to be back on roads on enforcement duty.

Police personnel, who have been among the frontline warriors in Telangana’s continuing battle against the Covid-19 pandemic, will be double careful this time, with more than 200 police personnel across the State getting affected with the virus. The department is drawing up a strategy to effectively enforce restrictions and also to make sure that its personnel stay safe in the process.

According to officials, the department is looking at ways of utilising technology to the maximum extent possible to keep a tab on those violating restrictions and to book cases under Section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act along with other provisions of the Indian Penal Code, if required.

Last time around, the police had seized a

large number of vehicles of violators and referred the cases to the court. From May 8, the police had also started using Artificial Intelligence technology(AI) along with surveillance cameras installed at strategic locations across the State to identify violators including those not wearing face masks.

“We will be more cautious this time while enforcing the lockdown. We will ask our staff to strictly adhere to personal safety norms while discharging duty,” an official, said adding that efforts would be made to rely more on surveillance cameras to enforce restrictions.

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 Cell that was set up in the office of Director-General of Police here will be re-activated to ensure proper supply of essential commodities and medicines, officials added.
