The Telangana Prisons Department has started an ‘Aftercare Services’ concept as part of its endeavor to help ex-convicts lead a normal life and not to fall back upon a life of crime,

The concept also facilitates ex-convicts in getting loans and jobs, Prisons Director-General VK Singh said at a press conference here on Thursday.

“Our objective is to help ex-convicts to lead a normal life and not to fall back upon a life of crime. The ultimate aim is to empty jails and

‘Aftercare Services’ is one of the mechanisms for that,” Singh said.

Singh said the arrival of repeat offenders in jails was continuing in spite of the department’s best efforts. “We want to bring it down to zero. We have to spread awareness among people so that they do not commit any offence,” he said. Of the total released prisoners, 20 per cent stand the chance of becoming repeat offenders and more focus needs to be laid on them, he added.
