Telangana Transport Department’s income declines by 17 per cent in 2024-25 FY

The Transport Department saw a dip in annual income for the 2024-25 financial year.

According to data from officials, the Transport Department, one of the important sources of revenue for the government, registered revenue of Rs 5,787 crore till January as against Rs 6,990 crore in the previous financial year, reflecting a drop by 17 per cent. The deficit income was Rs 1,203 crore. It had registered revenue of Rs 6,390 crore in 2022-23 financial year.

The department earned an annual income of Rs 3,971 crore in the 2021-22 fiscal, while the revenue for 2020-21 was Rs 3,228 crore. It recorded a decline of around 20 per cent in 2020-21 when compared to the revenue of Rs 3,515 crore due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It posted a considerable deficit in



the recently concluded financial year after the 2020-21 fiscal.

The department records income by registering vehicles, issuing permits and imposing fines against violators of road safety, collecting green taxes, etc. As many as 1.72 crore vehicles are registered with the department. Motorcycles accounted for 1.26 crore, while the State has 23,35,590 motor cars and 6.53 lakh goods carriages.

Officials opined that the inflation in jobs and slump in real estate sector might have affected revenues of the department in this year. Due to inflation, many employees lost jobs, resulting in dip in sales of vehicles and ultimately leaving an adverse impact on income of the department. They said the department could improve its earnings in this financial year.
