The City Traffic Police are introducing innovative methods to ensure that motorists do not jump traffic signals in the city on the pretext of not seeing the red light.
The traffic police are now experimenting with LED speed breakers at the KBR Park junction. The LED speed breakers automatically switch colours along with the traffic lights installed on the nearby conventional traffic signal post.
“The LED lights were embedded in the road after digging the surface. It is waterproof and will have little effect during rains or water stagnation. We are only experimenting now. Based on the results, a decision will be taken to
install it in the rest of the city,” said M Narsing Rao, Inspector, Traffic Police.
LED speed breakers will help motorists from identifying the signal from a distance and slow down the vehicle when the lights are red.
“Drivers often make excuses of not seeing the red light or a big vehicle blocking their view. But it will not be the case as the signal is right on the road surface,” officers said.
The LED speed breakers are connected to the output of the traffic signal box and simultaneously glow, changing in tune with the traffic lights.
