Peddapalli: Two workers of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited were killed and two others injured in a mine accident that took place in the Opencast-2 mine of Ramagundam-III area on Wednesday.

The incident occurred when a sidewall collapsed while workers were repairing a motor at high level sump in the second shift. Fitter Uppula Venkateshwarlu and Gadam Vidhyasagar died on the spot when the sidewall collapsed and fell on them. While Venkateshwarlu was a resident of Centenary colony, Vidhyasagar was staying in the Five Incline area.

The injured persons were Srinivasa Rao and Sammaiah, who were rescued by other workers from the debris and shifted to the Centenary

Colony dispensary, where they are undergoing treatment. The bodies were shifted to the Godavarikhani Singareni area hospital for postmortem.

Incidentally, the mishap occurred within a few hours of Singareni Director GV Reddy’s visit to the area and review meeting with officials on safety measures. Workers alleged that the incident occurred due to negligence of officials. Though it was raining during the last two days, officials had continued work instead of halting work. The workers, including the victims, were forced to work in the rain, they said, demanding that the management take action against the officials responsible for the incident.
