Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu emphasized the need to increase awareness among the people about the importance of eye health.
He inaugurated a retina institute in Hyderabad from Raj Bhawan at Ooty via video-conferencing last evening. He said there is a huge scope to curtail preventable blindness in rural India and asked the primary health centres in villages to be equipped with primary eye care facilities.
The Vice President urged private hospitals to complement the government efforts by opening their
satellite centres in rural areas. Observing that modern lifestyles and work requirements have increased the average screen time for people, he said the use of electronic gadgets, particularly among children, must be regulated as they run a higher risk of addiction.
Referring to various studies, Mr. Naidu said that retinal diseases are an emerging cause of visual impairment in the developing world. He said proper eye care and awareness creation are the key to prevent vision problems.
