IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao came down heavily on the BJP government at the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the backlash from Gulf countries in the wake of remarks by the saffron party spokespersons on Prophet Muhammad that led to a diplomatic storm. He asked the Prime Minister as to why India as a country should apologise to the international community for the hate speeches of BJP bigots.
In a series of tweets on Monday, Rama Rao said it was the BJP which should apologise, not India as a nation. He demanded that the BJP apologise to Indians at home for spewing hatred in society. “It is BJP that should apologise; not India as a Nation. Your party should first apologise to Indians at home for spewing & spreading hatred day in day out, (sic)” he said.
Recalling the incident when BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur hailed the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the Minister said the Prime Minister’s “silence was deafening and shocking.”
“Let me remind you sir;
What you permit is what you promote,” he said in another tweet, adding that “tacit support from top is what emboldened the bigotry and hatred.”
India is facing a huge backlash from the Gulf over the remarks by BJP spokespersons. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Iran have strongly condemned the remarks, describing them as “Islamophobic.”
Earlier on Sunday, the TRS working president questioned the double standards of the BJP on respecting all religions and demanded that the party leadership clarify on its selective treatment. He wondered why the BJP was not suspending its Telangana chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar.
“If the BJP truly respects all religions equally, should you also not suspend Telangana BJP chief who made an open public statement wanting to dig up all the mosques & impose a ban on Urdu? Why this selective treatment @JPNadda Ji? Any clarification? (sic)” he questioned BJP national president JP Nadda, reacting to the BJP statement after the party suspended its spokespersons.
