The third round of talks between Iran and three European countries is set to resume in Geneva, Switzerland today. The two-day meeting will focus on the nuclear issue. Representatives from the EU will also attend the discussions, involving Iran, Germany, France, and Britain. Earlier, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani stated that Iran is ready for talks with Western countries on its nuclear program, as long as Tehran’s highest interests are considered.
In recent days, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said the upcoming meeting is an extension of previous talks. This meeting follows a draft resolution
proposed by Britain, France, and Germany, with US support, in response to Iran’s lack of cooperation. The resolution, presented to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on November 21, 2024, passed with 19 votes in favour out of 35.
The IAEA has reported that Iran currently has 170 kilograms of uranium in stockpiles and is approaching the point where it could increase its enrichment to 90 per cent. While Tehran does not deny this, it claims that the uranium will be used for peaceful purposes. The talks will take place one week before Donald Trump assumes office as US President.
