In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), at least 87 people died when an overcrowded boat capsized on Lake Kivu in the eastern part of the country yesterday. The provincial government reported that 78 people are still missing. The exact number of passengers aboard the boat remains
unknown.
The boat was travelling from the town of Minova in South Kivu and sank as it approached Goma’s shore. According to witnesses, the overloaded vessel could not withstand a violent wave and sank 700 meters from the port of Kituku while attempting to dock.
