The building that was once conceived to reach a height of over one mile (1.6 km) will soon become a reality. Designed by Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill (pictured) of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture of Chicago, Illinois, U.S., the Jeddah Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is under construction and is expected to complete in 2020. Check out some interesting facts about the soon-to-be tallest building in the world.
The entire project is estimated to cost around $1.2 billion.
The skyscraper is expected to be 3,280 feet (999.7 meter) tall — almost 600 feet (182.8 meter) taller than the current world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
The building, also known as the Kingdom Tower, will house the world’s highest observatory which will have a total floor area of 2,637,158 square feet (245,000 square meters), including an outdoor balcony with a diameter of 98 feet (29.8 meters).
The multipurpose building will accommodate offices, a
200-room Four Seasons Hotel, 121 serviced apartments and 360 residential apartments.
With 200 floors, the tower will have 12 escalators and 59 elevators, five of those elevators will be double decker.
The building's "three petal" design has been inspired by the folded fronts of young desert plant growth and its tapering wings will give it an aerodynamic shape.
Each of the tower’s three sides feature a series of indentations that will create shadow regions protecting it from the sun, while providing outdoor terraces with splendid views of the city and the sea.
Jeddah Tower will contain 80,000 tons of steel and its core will comprise several meters thick concrete.
To lower energy consumption by reducing thermal loads, the tower will feature high-performance exterior wall system, including low-conductivity glass.
To cope with the potentially damaging saltwater from the ocean, the foundation of the building will be made 200 feet (60 meters) deep.
