Hours after the ceasefire came into effect between Armenia and Azerbaijan, both parties accused each other of derailing the deal in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
In negotiations moderated by Russia, the two warring nations had agreed on a peace deal to allow prisoners and the bodies of the dead to be exchanged. But the two sides traded blame for breaking the truce with new attacks, and Azerbaijan’s top diplomat said
the truce never entered force.
Armenian military accused Azerbaijan of shelling the area near the town of Kapan in southeastern Armenia, killing one civilian. Azerbaijan’s Defence Ministry rejected the Armenian accusations as a provocation. More than 300 people have died and thousands have been displaced since the latest violence in the long-running conflict broke out on September 27.
