The first Annual
Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank
will be held in Beijing today. Governors and representatives from the Bank’s 57
founding signatories, along with invited observers from international partners,
will participate in the two day meeting.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely is in Beijing to participate in the meeting. The theme of the meeting is the Partnership for Infrastructure Development.
The meeting will
connect finance and development professionals to exchange ideas on Asian
infrastructure development and regional connectivity. The
China-led Asian
Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has 57 member countries like South
Africa, Australia, United Kingdom and Germany among others.
The world's two biggest economies United States and Japan are not a part of it. Finance minister Arun Jaitely who is in China to attend the meeting said on Friday, that India wants to attract manufacturing investment following its latest market-opening initiatives.
He said New Delhi is looking to the AIIB as a possible source of financing for a backlog of infrastructure projects. India is the bank’s second-largest shareholder after China.
