In Ecuador, at least 15 inmates were killed and 14 others wounded in clashes between inmates at the largest prison. The violence broke out yesterday in a wing of the Litoral Penitentiary in the southwest city of Guayaquil. The country’s National Prison Administration agency, SNAI, said the security forces took immediate action to regain full control of the facility and activate a large-scale search operation. It added that an investigation is underway into the
incident.
The latest violence highlights the ongoing challenges faced by President Daniel Noboa’s government in addressing the country’s severe prison crisis. The Litoral Penitentiary has a history of violent disturbances linked to organized crime and drug trafficking groups. Since February 2021, more than 400 inmates have been killed in such incidents, according to official statistics.
