Anthony Albanese was sworn in as Prime Minister of Australia this morning. The 59-year-old new prime minister was sworn in at a brief ceremony in Government House, Canberra. Labor Senator Penny Wong was sworn in as foreign minister, Richard Marles as deputy prime minister, Jim Chalmers as treasurer, and Katy Gallagher as finance minister.
Albanese and
Wong are set to travel to Tokyo to attend Quad Leaders Summit, where they will meet with US President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The timing of the meeting is behind the rapid swearing-in, which will constitute one of the swiftest changes of government in Australia's history.
