Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the start of the priority stretch between Joydebpur-Tongi as part of the Dhaka-Tongi-Joydebpur rail line project funded under the Indian concessional Line of Credit (LOC). The Indian High Commission in a tweet called it a ‘testament to strong and enduring friendship’ between the two countries.
The 11 kilometre long dual-gauge double line from Tongi to Jaydebpur will help in increasing the operational capacity of the railway for running a greater number of train trips on this stretch of railway route. This section is used for travel from Dhaka to different parts of the country.
Prime Minister Hasina also inaugurated a total of 69.20 kilometres of rail line under the three
projects including the operation of trains on the Rooppur and Shashidal routes of the Bangladesh railways. The Roopur section of the railway will facilitate transportation of goods and equipment to the Rooppur Nuclear power plant.
Speaking from her official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka during the virtual inauguration on Thursday, Prime Minister Hasina said that Bangladesh will see a new era of connectivity by 2030 through the railway routes. She said the operationalisation of the new railway projects including the metro rail will ease travel, reduce traffic in Dhaka and save fuel for the country.
India’s Acting High Commissioner Dr. Binoy George also spoke on the occasion as special guest.
