In Brazil, Supreme Court has ruled that former President Jair Bolsonaro will stand trial for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the government after he lost the 2022 election. A five-judge panel decided unanimously yesterday to put Bolsonaro on trial. If found guilty in the court proceedings expected later this year, Bolsonaro could face a long prison sentence. Soon after the ruling, Bolsonaro held a press conference in Brasilia to deliver defense against what he called grave and

baseless accusations.

A week after President Lula da Silva’s inauguration, on 8 January 2023, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed government buildings in the capital, Brasilia. Investigators say, it was an attempted coup. Parts of the buildings were ransacked and police arrested 1,500 people. Bolsonaro was in the United States at the time and has always denied any links to the rioters.
