In Germany, opposition conservatives Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) parties have made a winning lead in the national elections, paving the way for their leader Friedrich Merz to be the next chancellor. On the other hand, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is showing its best result by leading in second place.

National Elections in Germany concluded yesterday with some core issues influencing the voters. Some of the key issues include the state of the German economy, which has witnessed stagnation in the past couple of years. The recent attacks committed by migrants have also brought the issue of migration.

United States President

Donald Trump has reacted to the election trends. In a social media post, Mr Trump said that much like the USA, the people of Germany got tired of the no-common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration, that has prevailed for so many years. French President Emmanuel Macron has also congratulated Friedrich Merz on his election victory, expressing his enthusiasm for strengthening France-Germany relations and working together towards a unified Europe. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also congratulated Merz and the CDU/CSU, saying that he looks forward to working with the new government to deepen the already strong relationship and deliver growth for both countries.
