Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu reached Pakistan to attend the oath-taking ceremony of Pakistan’s Prime Minister-elect Imran Khan.
Imran Khan, Pakistan’s world cup winning captain, secured the most seats in the recently-held Pakistan general elections. Along with Sidhu, he extended invitations to former Indian captains Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev.
However, Gavaskar and Kapil turned down the invitations owing to the volatile relationship between the two countries.
Sidhu, on the other hand, has been quite vocal in his support from Imran and also informed the Home Ministry and Punjab
Chief Minister’s office about his intention of attending the swearing-in ceremony.
He hailed the new Prime Minister as a man of character and hoped that he would mend relations between the two countries.
“It is (a) great honour, I accept the invitation. Men of genius are admired, men of power are feared, but men of character are trusted. Khan Sahab is a man of character. He can be trusted. Sportsmen build bridges, break barriers, unite people,” the former cricketer said.
However, not everyone agreed with his decision. Subramanium Swamy, the BJP leader tore into Sidhi for choosing to attend the ceremony.
