US HACKERS are ready to launch a massive cyber-attack on Russia amid fears the Kremlin could interfere with next week’s Presidential election, top-secret documents have revealed.
Classified documents and a top intelligence official have revealed Washington has penetrated Russia’s electric grid, telecommunications networks and the Kremlin’s command system.
The cache, seen by NBC News, confirms the US has been “preparing the battlefield” – leaving virus-ridden cyber-weapons known as “malware” on parts of the key infrastructure that would enable the military to completely shut down Vladimir Putin’s war-waging abilities.
And former Nato commander Admiral James Stavridis said the US is ready to respond to any Russian attack on the US.
He said: “I think there're three things we should do if we see a significant cyber-attack.
“The first obviously is defending against it.
“The second is reveal: We should be publicizing what has happened so that any of this kind of cyber trickery can be unmasked.
“And
thirdly, we should respond. Our response should be proportional.”
The revelation comes amid a stark warning from US military officials, telling Russia not to meddle in next week’s knife-edge vote.
Hacker Guccifer 2.0 – which US military chiefs say is a front for Russian spy agencies – last week issued a chilling warning they would monitor the election “from inside the system”.
The Pentagon is not expecting a massive cyber-assault on the US, but it is anticipating “mischief” in the run-up to Tuesday’s vote.
This could involve the possible release of fake documents and the spreading of bogus social media accounts determined on proliferating misinformation.
The US has previously accused Moscow of attempting to influence the election, including hacking into the emails of the Democratic Party.
And it is not just the US that Russia is believed to be targeting.
Hundreds of hackers under Vladimir Putin’s command are believed to be launching covert attacks on British institutions such as banks and Government servers.
