Cyclone Mocha crosses Bangladesh, weakens into deep depression

The Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Mocha completely crossed Bangladesh coast by 6 in the evening on Sunday, May 14 and weakened into a land deep depression near Sittwe in Myanmar. It is  likely to move inland further and weaken gradually by giving precipitation, said the Bangladesh Meteorological  Department in its latest  cyclone bulletin on Sunday evening. 

Mitime ports of Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Payra and Mongla have been advised to only keep hoisting distant cautionary signal number three. 

Close to 10,000 houses were partially damaged and 3000 huts completely destroyed due to the



Cyclone in the Cox’s Bazar area, said the local administration. On Saint Martin island, at least 10 people are reported injured and over 300 houses were damaged due to the cyclone. 

Many of the people who moved to cyclone shelters are returning home after the cyclone crossed Bangladesh coast. 

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Sunday said that it will take two days to improve the power and gas supply situation in the country as one of the two LNG floating terminals will start functioning to supply gas again.
