Colombo: Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that a date for the local government elections still hasn’t been announced. Addressing the Parliament he dismissed the reports of 9th of March to be the date of polls. He added that there has been no official decision made to hold the election.
The president claimed that the five-member
election commission was not unanimous on the conduct of the polls.
Opposition parties claim that the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Party does not want the election to go ahead fearing a humiliating defeat. Mr. Wickremesinghe said that there are no funds at present, but all stakeholders can discuss a possible solution.
