Incumbent Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa has secured a second four-year term in the country’s presidential elections. He won 55.85 percent of the vote against his left-wing challenger, Luisa González. The 37-year-old right-wing leader hailed his victory as historic and reaffirmed his commitment to continuing Ecuador’s war on
drugs.
Ecuador has one of the highest homicide rates in South America. Although President Noboa has managed to reduce it to some extent, his use of the military on the streets and the construction of new high-security prisons to fight drug trafficking have also led to a surge in violence
