Zimbabwe's former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sworn in as the President of the country today. Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda said that the ruling ZANU-PF party has nominated the 75-year old leader to fill the vacancy left by Mr Robert Mugabe.
The new leader will take oath at a 60,000-seat stadium in capital Harare. A spokesman for the ruling party said he would serve the remainder of Mr Mugabe's term until
elections that are due to be held by September 2018.
Mr Mugabe stepped down as the President on Tuesday after 37-years rule. Meanwhile, ZANU-PF chief whip Lovemore Matuke has said that Mr Megabe will not be prosecuted. He told a news agency that prosecution of 93-year old leader was never part of the plan. He said the former President is safe, his family is safe and his status as a hero of his country is assured.
