In the Philippines, the death toll due to flash floods caused by unrelenting rain in Palawan province has climbed to five. Local authorities said rescuers found two remaining bodies after floodwaters swept away a van carrying 12 people on Sunday night.
The bodies of three other people were found yesterday, while seven passengers had been safely rescued and are now recuperating at a local hospital. Palawan province
recorded its heaviest 24-hour rainfall as a weather phenomenon called a shear line continued to affect the area.
Due to widespread flooding, over two thousand families were forced to evacuate and have been staying in temporary government-run shelters. Last year, massive flooding and landslides caused by tropical storm Trami in the Philippines led to 130 deaths.
