Along with Nasheed, twelve Members of Parliament who supported him also left MDP to form a new party "The Democrats", months before Presidential elections due in September.
Former Maldivian President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has decided to part ways with the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party. Along with Nasheed, twelve Members of Parliament who supported him also left MDP to form a new party "The Democrats", months before Presidential elections due in September. The Election Commission is yet to recognise the party.
Nasheed shared his decision through a handwritten letter
addressed to MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail, which he posted on social media.
In the letter, Nasheed expressed his gratitude to the party and its members and stated that he had chosen to take a different path.
MDP which had super majority in the 87 member Majlis, witnessed disagreements when Nasheed proposed a change in the government system from a presidential system to a parliamentary system. The MDP still holds majority with 55 MPs.
Earlier this year, President Ibrahim Solih had won ruling MDP presidential primary elections.
