A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed on Sunday, sending train cars crashing onto the light rail tracks below at Station Square in Pittsburgh.

According to The Port Authority of Allegheny County, inbound and outbound light rail service was suspended due to a freight train derailing down to Station Square from the hill above.

"There was a shower nearby, but it doesn’t appear to have been over the city then," AccuWeather Meteorologist Randy Atkins said.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. EDT Sunday, when

sustained winds at the Pittsburgh International Airport were blowing from the west at 11 mph.
Multiple train cars could be seen resting on the light rail tracks at the Station Square T stop, near the Station Square complex in Pittsburgh’s South Shore neighborhood.

The Port Authority has established a bus shuttle from Wood Street Station to Potomac Station on the Red Line and from Wood Street Station to South Bank on the Blue Line. Travelers are expected to face road and bridge closures on Monday stemming from the derailment.
