Hariri announces his resignation from the presidency of the Lebanese government

 in response to the people's demands, saying that he would head to the Baabda presidential palace in order to present the resignation to President Michel Aoun.

Local media in Lebanon reported that Hariri had contacted political parties, expressing his desire to resign.

An unprecedented wave of protests erupted in Lebanon on October 17 after the Hariri government announced its intention to impose taxes on WhatsApp calls to fill the chronic budget deficit.

Protests against the Hariri government and the country's ruling political class quickly turned, and protesters demanded the downfall of the Hariri government, which they say failed to address the country's



serious economic downturn.

Hariri presented a paper of reforms in an attempt to defuse protests, such as lowering the salaries of ministers and lawmakers, but street protesters rejected it. There was talk of a government reshuffle, but that did not calm the street, which has been demanding the departure of Hariri and his government.

Hariri hinted that he might resign when he announced that, if the demonstrators wanted early elections, they would support them.

Hariri has been prime minister in Lebanon since, the third time he has held the post since late January, after lengthy consultations that lasted seven months.

He was named prime minister between 2009-2011 and 2016-2018.

Hariri, 49, the son of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, was assassinated in 2005.

Saad was not known in the political arena until the assassination of his father, but his political star shone after that, to become head of the Future Movement, founded by his father, and elected MP for Beirut.

According to the Lebanese constitution, the presidency of the government is for the Sunnis, the presidency of the Republic for the Maronites and the presidency of the Shiite parliament, which opened the way for Hariri to become prime minister because he belongs to the Sunni community.
