Hindi has been ranked as third and Bangla ranked as the seventh most spoken language of the world in 2019.
The 22nd edition of the world language database Ethnologue stated that Hindi comes at third position with 615 million speakers and Bangla has 228 million native speakers that making it the seventh-largest spoken language of the world.
Ethnologue brings out a yearly database of living languages of the world since its establishment in 1951. The current round of the database covers 7,111 living languages of the world.
The latest report places English at the top
of the list with 1,132 million speakers. Chinese Mandarin is at second position with 1117 million speakers.
Sylheti and Chittagaonian languages spoken in Sylhet and Chittagong regions of Bangladesh are separately counted as languages. Chittagonian language has 13 million speakers and it is placed at 88th position while Sylheti was ranked at 97th with 11.8 million speakers.
In addition to living languages, Ethnologue also contains data on languages that have gone out of use in recent history. This edition lists 348 such languages.
