Several people were reported injured in two incidents on Saturday night -- one on London Bridge and the other in nearby Borough Market -- with armed police of Scotland Yard deployed in the area teeming with tourists and residents enjoying the weekend night out.
The British Transport Police said there were reports of a number of casualties after the London Bridge incident involved a vehicle and a knife, while Scotland Yard said officers were also dealing with incident in the Borough Market.
There was much panic and confusion as bars and restaurants asked their customers to leave. Witnesses said a white van mounted the pavement on the bridge and drove into people, reminding many of the March 22 incident on Westminster Bridge that left five people dead.
Scotland Yard said "multiple
sources" were attending the incident at London Bridge, which was closed in both directions..
Downing Street said: "The prime minister is in contact with officials and is being regularly updated on the incident at London Bridge."
Eyewitness Will Orton, who was in a pub, told the BBC: "Lots of people came running inside, we didn't really know what was going on. We thought maybe there was a fight or something outside. And then there were almost hundreds of people coming inside".
"The bouncers did a really good job, they shut the doors and locked everyone in. There was panic - it seemed like it was literally outside the door. People were coming inside and saying they had witnessed people being stabbed. It seemed like it was happening immediately outside the entrance."
