Myanmar's military government will release 9,652 prisoners, including 114 foreigners, under amnesty to mark the country's Independence Day. In an announcement, the Junta, the State Administration Council, said, the decision to pardon has been taken to maintain relations with other countries and on humanitarian grounds. It added that they would be deported.
Thursday’s announced amnesty, part of an annual release, comes as the government
faces a crisis in the country’s north, where ethnic armed groups have captured military and border posts, threatening to block trade with China. The Southeast Asian nation has been in turmoil since the military seized power in February 2021.
Authorities typically release some prisoners on the 4th of January every year to mark the day when Myanmar declared Independence from British rule.
