US President Barack Obama has said, there is no clear evidence that the Orlando gunman was directed by the Islamic State group to carry out the mass killing. Talking to reporters after receiving a briefing from the FBI yesterday, he said, the killer does not appear to be part of a broader IS plot.
However, Mr Obama said, the inquiry into the night club attack is being treated as a terrorist investigation. The US President said, the gunman was motivated by extremist information distributed over the internet and termed
the killer, an apparent example of homegrown extremism.
He said, it appears that Omar Mateen was able to obtain weapons legally, as he did not have a criminal record. He said, the motivation of the shooter is not known yet.
On the other hand, in a radio bulletin yesterday, the IS group claimed responsibility for the Sunday's attack.
Omar, the 29-year-old Afghan-origin gunman, killed at least 50 people at a nightclub in Orlando in United States' deadliest mass shooting incident.
