Islamabad: Senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Fawad Chaudhry, Asad Umar, Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, Ali Zaidi and Akram Usman were arrested yesterday.
The move comes a day after the arrest of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. The party has claimed that 47 of its workers died, and 1,000 were arrested in clashes with security forces. Chaudhry who had sought refuge inside the court for over 12 hours was ultimately taken into custody. Pakistan’s military was called in large parts of the country to maintain law and order.
Earlier in the day, a Pakistani court indicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Toshakhana corruption case.
In August last year, the coalition government led by Pakistan Muslim
League-Nawaz (PML-N) had filed a case against Mr Khan, claiming that he didn’t disclose information on gifts presented to Toshakhana and the proceeds from the illegal sale of some the gifts.
The court also granted 8-day physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to the National Accountability Bureau in the Al-Qadir Trust case.
Many countries have issued travel advisories for their citizens and diplomatic staff, citing political unrest in Pakistan. The US Embassy has announced a travel alert for its citizens in Pakistan. The Canadian government asked its citizens and diplomatic staff to exercise a high degree of caution in Pakistan due to the unpredictable security situation.
