Police from a joint Abu Dhabi-Dubai task force arrested an 11-member gang of phone scammers.
The 11-member gang of Asian nationals targeted victims all over the UAE.
Col. Mubarak Saif Al Sabousi, Director of Al Ain Police Directorate in the Criminal Security Sector, said: "Several residents tipped us off at the Hili Police Station about falling victim to a phone scam. It became clear that the incidents all had a common modus operandi."
"The gang would send text messages about winning cash prizes. They would then ask for their bank details to transfer the money."
He added, "Credit cards, banknotes, cheque books, SIM cards and money were found in the gang's possession and confiscated."
Al Sabousi commended the efforts exerted by the joint team in arresting the gang. "Abu Dhabi Police continues to raise awareness by educating the public about such scams."
