Protesters planned a fresh round of disruption in Hong Kong today

In Hong Kong, protesters planned a fresh round of disruption today after violent clashes led police to shoot a pro-democracy activist for the first time since the unrest began in June.

Anti-government protests turned violent early yesterday and continued into the night, as thousands of people demonstrated in defiance of a protest ban for the 70th anniversary of Communist rule in China.

Hong Kong Police confirmed that a protester was shot in Tsuen Wan district, where protests earlier



turned violent. According to health authorities, at least 66 people were also injured. Two people were in a critical condition and two others were seriously injured, said the Hospital Authority.  According to local media, at least 180 people were arrested.

Secondary schools in Hong Kong were planning a mass class boycott today in response to the point-blank shooting of an 18-year-old man that was captured in dramatic video footage.
