Doha: In Qatar, results of the first legislative council election have been announced, with none of the 26 female candidates winning at the polls. The citizens voted yesterday in the Gulf Arab state’s first legislative elections for two-thirds of the advisory Shura Council. The Shura Council has legislative authority and approves general state policies
and the budget.
However, it has no say in the setting of defence, security, economic and investment policy. The Interior Ministry said in a statement that turnout for the election of 30 members of the 45-seat body was 63.5 percent. The emir will continue to appoint the remaining 15 Council members.
