Russia has liquidated the last arsenals of chemical weapons in the Southwest of the country, three years ahead of schedule. Mikhail Babich, Chairman of the State Commission on Chemical Disarmament, informed the Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday that the elimination process was completed ahead of schedule.
Describing this as a huge step towards making the modern world more balanced and more secure, Mr.
Putin stressed that Moscow strictly fulfills its international obligations including in the field of disarmament and the non-proliferation of mass destruction. However, Mr. Putin in a televised interview to a TV channel said that the United States has not fulfilled its own obligations to destroy chemical weapons. He said that the US has put off doing so three times citing a lack of financial resources.
