UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that scientists predict the extreme storm during this year's Atlantic hurricane season will be 'new normal' of the warming world.
Stating this during his hurricane-battered Caribbean today, Mr. Guterres said that scientists are learning more and more about the links between climate change and extreme weather.
As for changes in major climate
systems, Mr. Guterres said sea levels have risen more than 10 inches since 1870. The secretary-general will be visiting Antigua and Barbuda, and Dominica, on Saturday to survey the damage and assess what more the United Nations can do.
Mr. Guterres stressed for innovative financing mechanisms which will be crucial to enable these small islands to recover, rebuild and strengthen resilience.
