Leicester: A scuffle has escalated into communal tension in Leicester city in the United Kingdom between Hindu and Muslim communities. A Hindu temple was vandalized and a saffron flag outside the temple was pulled down by unidentified people in East Leicester. The Leicestershire Police has initiated an investigation after a video of the incident surfaced online.
According to reports, there has been continuous trouble in the eastern part of the city since the 28th of August, when India and Pakistan played a group stage match in the Asia Cup T20 cricket tournament in Dubai. India had won the match.
The Leicester Police said in a statement yesterday that parts of East Leicester experienced serious disorder on Saturday evening. It said that several incidences of violence were
reported and they are being investigated. The police also informed that two arrests have been made in the case so far.
The mayor of Leicester said that the scuffle that broke out in the city over the weekend between Hindu and Muslim communities escalated as a result of social media disinformation and a distortion of facts. The Indian High Commission in the UK has released a statement condemning the vandalization of premises and symbols of the Hindu religion.
It said that Indian High Commission has taken up the matter with the UK authorities and has sought immediate actions against those involved in these attacks. The High Commission has also called on the authorities to provide protection to the affected people.
