CHENNAI: As many as, five rail passnegers aged between 22 to 35 killed after they fell from the electrical mutilple unit (EMU) train in which they were travelling ran over on them in St. Thomas Mount railway station on Tuesday.
According to sources, the EMU train was on its way from Chennai Beach to Thirumalpur and the mishap occured while the train was entering into St. Thomas Mount Station around 8.15 am.
There were about 30 passengers travelling on foot board of EMU train. While the train entered into St. Thomas Mount station in fast line, the passengers hit the parapet wall near electric pole in the statioin.
In this impact, about ten passengers fell off from the trains, while two who came under wheels died on the spot, and three others killed on their way to hospital. Seven passengers sustained grevious injuries.The rail passengers who travelled in the train have pulled emergency chain and rescued the those trapped beneath the train.
Government railway police have
identifeid the deceased as Sivakumari, Bharathi and Shankar, while the identity of two more yet to ascertained. Two rail passengers also lost their legs in the incident.
Railway sources said EMU services were delayed in Chennai Beach -- Guindy section since 7 am, owing signal failure near Kodambakkam station. Apparently, Chennai Beach - Thirumalpur suburban train operated with jampacked crowded passengers.
The trains were operated in fast line untill St.Thomas mount, from there trains were diverted to slow line.
The Injured were rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment.
On Monday, two rail passnegers also killed in St. Thomas Mount after falling from the EMU train
Railway officials and Government railway police conducting an inquiry for cause of the accident.
Railway services were disrupted for 30 mims due to the accident and a few railway passengers also staged a protest demanding safety in the trains.
