In Sri Lanka, severe rains over the weekend have caused widespread devastation across the island, claiming at least 15 lives and leaving more than 19,000 people from over 5,000 families marooned.
Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) stated that the fatalities occurred in seven districts, including the capital, Colombo, where torrential rains exceeding 300 mm have led to flash floods, uprooted trees, strong winds, lightning, and landslides. Twenty out of the 25 administrative districts have been severely affected.
More than 4,000 homes have suffered partial damage, with 28 houses completely obliterated. The Sri Lankan Army has mobilized seven teams equipped with boats for rescue
operations, while the Air Force has put three helicopters on standby for immediate emergency response in the affected areas.
In anticipation of further rainfall and flooding, the Ministry of Education has announced the closure of all schools across the island for Monday. The Ministry of Power and Energy has also suspended electricity supplies to several areas as a precautionary measure. Additionally, the National Building Research Centre has issued red notices for landslides in four districts.
The government and local authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and ensure the safety of those affected by this natural disaster.
