South Korea and the United States will hold vice-ministerial talks in Washington on deterrence efforts against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. South Korea’s foreign ministry said in a release that the fifth meeting of the Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group (EDSCG ) will take place on Wednesday. The talks will address ways to bolster coordination between the two countries to enhance the extended deterrence against North Korea in light of the
current security landscape.
The EDSCG dialogue was resumed in September 2022, following a 4-year suspension since its last session in January 2018, when the then-liberal Moon Jae-in administration pushed for an initiative to promote inter-Korean rapprochement. Moon Jae-in advocated for denuclearisation and peace in the Korean Peninsula as well as the advancement of inter-Korean relations.
