South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has ordered a ceasefire after days of intense fighting in capital Juba left number of people dead and many more injured. Information Minister Michael Makuei said on state television last evening that the President has reiterated his commitment to the continued implementation of the peace agreement.
Speaking to a local radio station, First Vice President and former rebel leader Riek Machar urged his forces to honor the ceasefire.
There was renewed fighting between government and former rebel forces since Thursday in Juba. The latest exchanges were apparently sparked by a
shootout between President Kiir's and Vice President Machar's bodyguards.
Local radio in the capital earlier reported that as many as 276 people were killed in several days of violence. However, spokesman for the Vice President said at least 150 were killed with scores of others wounded.
India is planning evacuation of its nationals from South Sudan in view of the violence. In a series of tweets, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj asked the nationals to register themselves with the Indian Embassy and not to panic. People have also been advised not to travel to South Sudan till the situation improves.
