Sri Lanka: Jagath Wickramaratne elected as new Speaker of Parliament

In Sri Lanka, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne has been elected as new Speaker of the Parliament. The appointment of the new speaker comes following the resignation of Asoka Ranwala on December 13 in the midst of a



controversy over his educational qualifications. Dr. Wickramaratne’s name was proposed by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and seconded by Minister Bimal Rathnayake.
