Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that they will form a new political alliance in the name of “National Democratic Front” and will register it to contest the next general elections. Mr Wickremsinghe, who was reappointed prime minister on Sunday, said this while addressing a victory rally of his United National Party (UNP) in Colombo yesterday evening. He said, a massive alliance will be formed to establish democracy and they will safeguard the country with that.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said, his government will be asking all the political parties as to when they want the general election to be held. The Prime Minister conceded that his government does have shortcomings, but vowed to address
them and invited the people to speak about their deficiencies. He requested the public to give them a two-third majority at the next general election to abolish the executive presidency once and for all.
The PM said that he bows his head and salutes everyone who fought for democracy. Thousands of people attended the rally which was planned before President Maithripala Sirisena decided to reinstate Mr. Wickremsinghe, ending a weeks long crisis. However, tensions still remain between the two individuals with President saying that he is personally against the appointment of Mr. Wickremsinghe but appointed him for parliamentary traditions and democracy.
