Khartoum: The fighting eased on Tuesday allowing more foreigners and locals time and space to flee the Sudan’s capital Khartoum. Khartoum has been in focus as the World Health Organisation has warned of a high risk of biological hazards in the city. The WHO warning came after one of the warring factions in Sudan seized a city laboratory that stores measles and cholera pathogens for vaccinations.
Sudan has been witnessing intense fighting between the army and
the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). An exodus of embassies and aid workers has raised concerns about civilian lives if an alternative to hostilities is not found before a three-day truce ends on Thursday. Since the hostilities erupted on April 15, tens of thousands have already left for neighbouring Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan. Air strikes and artillery shells have killed around 500 people so far while over four thousand have been wounded.
