Only a fraction of results have been
announced in Myanmar's historic Parliamentary elections, though Aung San Suu
Kyi's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) is projected to record a
landslide victory.
The military-backed ruling party Union Solidarity Development Party (USDP) has already conceded defeat. USDP have been in power since 2011 when the country began its transition from decades of military rule to a civilian government.
In results declared so far for Lower House of Parliament, NLD has won 78 seats, USDP has retained 5 seats and others have gained 5 out of 325.
In Upper House of Parliament, NLD has
won 29 seats, whereas USDP has
got 2 seats and others have claimed 2 seats out
of 168.
Of 660 seats in State or Region Parliament, NLD has won 182 seats USDP has 19 and others have claimed 11 in results announced so far.
But final official results will not be known for days as hundreds of more results, including many from remote areas with poor infrastructure, need to be announced before the full picture becomes clear.
The Myanmar's Parliamentary system allows 25 percent of seats in all houses to be reserved for Millitary appointed representatives. That means the NLD would need to win more than two-thirds of the remaining seats in each house to secure majorities.
