In Syria, top Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was killed during a counterterrorism operation led by the US special forces. An announcement to this effect was made by US President Joe Biden last night. After being surrounded by the US forces, the Islamic State leader blew himself up along with his family members during the raid on Wednesday night in northwestern Syria.
Abu Ibrahim had taken over as head of the
militant group on October 31, 2019 days after Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died during a US raid in the same area. About 50 US special operations forces landed in helicopters and attacked a house in a rebel-held corner of Syria, clashing for two hours with terrorists. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that four civilians and five combatants were killed during the raid while 10 civilians were evacuated to safety.
