In the United States, Tropical Storm Barry began hitting Louisiana with wind and rain, building towards hurricane strength.
With the storm expected to blow ashore today as the first hurricane of the season, National Guard troops and rescue crews were posted around the State with boats, high-water vehicles and helicopters. Utility repair crews with bucket trucks have moved
into position in the region.
Forecasters said the storm could unload 25 to 50 centimetres of rain tomorrow across Louisiana that includes New Orleans and Baton Rouge as well as Mississippi. It is expected to roll in as a weak hurricane.
President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency in Louisiana.
